Alexander Johnston is an Irish Designer and Maker whose work reflects his passion for expression through natural forms and organic materials. By exploring unique craft skills and applying them to contemporary furniture his work reveals an intuitive relationship with making, a sympathetic use of materials and a sculptural approach to form.

After completing his training as a cabinetmaker at the internationally renowned Waters & Acland school, he went on to produce a number of contemporary luxury pieces for their studio. His technical expertise was then consolidated at Peter Hall and Son, a long-standing traditional cabinetry workshop, specializing in the production of Art and Crafts style furniture. Through this, and by visiting makers across Europe and Canada he has created a deep understanding of furniture construction and design.

In his personal work Alexander Johnston has explored techniques from other craft forms such as cleaving wood, a process used for creating shingles and fence posts. This experimentation has revealed striking and beautiful contours rarely seen or appreciated in furniture. These organic forms twisted, compressed and shaped by the life of each tree offer a unique portrait of the material and give his work its distinct sculptural presence.

Craftsmanship Defined

Passion. Precision. Elegance.

Alexander's work is informed by his professional training as a cabinetmaker, that is; a meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of construction principles. Through this foundation, he has been able to incorporate techniques from other craft forms such as cleaving wood, a process used for creating shingles and fence posts.
